How to read these scores

  • Flesch Reading Ease: 0-100 scale. Higher = easier. 60-70 is "plain English" (readable by 13-15 year olds). Reader's Digest sits around 65; Harvard Law Review around 30.
  • Grade-level scores (Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog, SMOG, Coleman-Liau, ARI): each is a US school grade. A score of 8 means an 8th-grader could read it. Aim for grade 7-9 for general audiences; grade 10-12 for professional readers; grade 13+ reads as academic / legal.
  • Why five formulas? They weight syllables, word length, and sentence complexity differently. If they all broadly agree, your score is robust. If one is wildly higher β€” usually SMOG, which punishes polysyllabic words β€” your text has a long-word problem.
  • Rules of thumb: average sentence length under 20 words. Avoid stacking three polysyllabic words in a row. Prefer "use" to "utilise", "help" to "facilitate".
